FACEBOOK SAYS THE WAY I WISH PEOPLE PEOPLE HAPPY BIRTHDAY IS “ABUSIVE” OR “SPAMMY”
SO: last spring, I decided to start wishing people “Happy Birthday” on Facebook. I had avoided doing this in the past, as it seemed to me that once you started then you couldn’t ever stop and it would just be a life of non-stop typing “Happy Birthday!!!” on people’s Facebook walls.
But then I had this footage… For those of you who don’t know, my dad used to be a local weatherman in my hometown of Jefferson City, MO, and for the first ten years of my life he was also the host of a LIVE weekday afternoon kids’ show called SHOWTIME, which featured puppets, a studio audience of kids and various packages of Warner Bros. cartoons and Little Rascals shorts.
[…]
Today, when I went to post this video— which I have given the title “Puppets and A Dog Birthday Song Performance”— on my friend Cory Palmer’s Facebook wall, the action was DENIED by Facebook, with a message that told me that the material I was attempting to post had been flagged by Facebook as potentially “abusive” or “spammy.”
I attempted to re-post it immediately, after filling out a little questionnaire screen that popped up, and the re-post worked, but the whole thing made me angry.
[…]
I’m going to keep trying to post this on people’s Facebook pages, but I have the sinking feeling that Facebook is going to try to stop me.
IN CONCLUSION: FACEBOOK IS TRYING TO RUIN BIRTHDAYS. THAT IS ALL.
My eyes lit up when I received this video this morning. Late last night, lying in bed, it occurred to me that Connor might post this on my wall today, and I got so excited.
This is a great thing, Facebook, and I’m hurt to hear that you tried to ruin my birthday. Our already-strained relationship just grew more troublesome.

a) Although I don’t think Facebook should prevent you from posting it, it quite clearly IS “abusive.”
b) I was happy to receive this video on my 30th. It frightened me into happiness and warped my brain sufficiently to accept my pending mortality.
